Seminar on Contemporary Bangladesh: Society and Culture




The Department of Applied Sociology is going to hold a seminar at 10.30 am on 11 February 2016 at the Conference Room, ASA Tower at level 9 entitled "Contemporary Bangladesh: Society and Culture." Professor Dr. Dalem Ch. Barman, the Vice Chancellor of ASA University Bangladesh will grace the occasion as the Chief Guest. Dr. Cecep Effendi, Director General of the Centre on Integrated Rural Development for Asia and the Pacific (CIRDAP) will be present as the Special Guest. The keynote speaker of the seminar will be Dr. Badrul Alam Khan, Professor of Sociology, Western Sydney University, Australia. Three graduates of the department will also make brief presentation of their research works including a video documentary. The seminar will be moderated by Professor S. Aminul Islam, Chairman of the Department of Applied Sociology, ASAUB.

The Department of Applied Sociology held a seminar on 11 February 2016 at the Conference Room, ASA University Bangladesh entitled "Contemporary Bangladesh: Society and Culture." Professor Dr. Dalem Ch. Barman, the Vice Chancellor of ASA University Bangladesh graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. Dr. Cecep Effendi, Director General of the Centre on Integrated Rural Development for Asia and the Pacific (CIRDAP) was present as the Special Guest. The keynote speaker of the seminar was Dr. Badrul Alam Khan, Professor of International Relations and Social Behaviour , Western Sydney University, Australia. Three graduates of the department made presentation of their research works including a video documentary. Three presentations of the graduates of the Department included "A Disappearing Community: Pals of Shimulia"by Zaed Siddiqui, "Local Level Political Dynamics in Bangladesh by Md. Naziur Rahman, and "Social Exclusion and "Livelihoods in a Tea Garden of Bangladesh: A Sociological Study of Clevedon Tea Estate"by Iffat Imami. An excellent video documentary on the disappearing Patters of Shimulia was also shown in the seminar.

Professor Badrul Alam Khan spoke about the importance of using sociological imagination and historical perspective including the political struggles and the Liberation War that led to the emergence of Bangladesh as the key element in understanding the contemporary Bangladesh society and culture. Dr. Cecep Effendi spoke highly of the presentations by graduates of the department and highlighted the importance studying and working hard for the continued prosperity of the country. Professor Dalem Chandra Barman stressed upon the four principles of the Constitution as the basis for understanding contemporary Bangladesh society and culture.

The seminar was moderated by Professor S. Aminul Islam, Chairman of the Department of Applied Sociology, ASAUB.
